Legacy High School
Legacy High School was started in 1996, due to the growth and demand for a High School curriculum. Legacy is one of the few government funded, non-public high schools in New York City, offering both Regents and RCT level diplomas to students with educational disabilities. Our curriculum provides students with the academic, emotional, and social support needed to function independently and responsibly in today's world.
Our students are remarkable. Their aspirations for achievement are phenomenal. Emotional and learning differences are seen as a challenge rather than a limitation. Students believe in themselves and we believe in them. This is the heart of our Regents and RCT curriculum which provides students with the academic, emotional and social support to encourage independence, responsibility and critical thinking.
Legacy High School is dedicated to:
• Enabling students to earn their high school diploma (Regents or RCT)
• Developing a code of ethics within each student; a value system to guide him or her through life
• Opening a door for each student, whether pursuing college or not, so that he/she graduates with a good sense of career opportunities
• Supplying students with hands-on job experiences within the school setting, as well as in the community, as a means of ensuring a successful post-secondary transition for each student
• Building the social skills needed for positive, meaningful and safe interaction with peers, family, co-workers and members of the community-at-large
• Helping students become independent, active, contributing members of society to a level commensurate with each student’s potential
• Identifying, encouraging and developing interests, talents and related skills which can be incorporated into vocational and/or leisure pursuits, through structured therapeutic, extra-curricular activities
In Regents curriculum, students have to master highly academic work according to NYS standards, while continuing to fill in gaps in learning. When appropriate, advanced placement classes are available for students who excel in particular subjects. Our graduates have gone on to colleges such as, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York Institute of Technology, CUNY, Pratt, FIT, St. John’s, Seton Hall, the School of Visual Arts, and the Culinary Institute. The RCT curriculum is designed to progressively challenge each student academically and emotionally, with a commitment to tapping each student’s potential, oftentimes obstructed by low self-esteem, anxiety, and behavioral difficulties. Classes offer hands-on job experiences within the school setting. Transition to vocational careers is viewed as a sign of success and valuable.
The emphasis in both settings is on the whole child – academic, social and emotional. Compassion and tolerance of others is stressed. Each student receives support from an advisor twice a month. Students have the option of pursuing Independent Study for academic credit or extra credit. Every week the entire teaching staff meets as a group in our school’s unique Gestalt Conferences where ideas are generated to improve student performance.
