WorldQuest Competition December 3, 2009 - Winners Announced
Legacy High School students, Jennie, Kevin, Torrin, and Starasia made their elective teacher proud at the WorldQuest Competition. After a stressful evening of a barrage of team oriented questions, the suspense built as the judges totaled scores. When the announcement of the winners finally arrived, we learned that 3rd place was won by The Bronx High School of Science. Then it was announced that there was a tie for 1st Place between Herricks High School and Legacy High School! In the sudden death playoff, both teams were given one minute to answer a current event question in writing. Round one resulted in a tie. After round two, the points were awarded to Herricks High School so Legacy students became the second place winners. Were they disappointed? No way! We are so proud of Popie and her class for holding their own with such high caliber schools. Congratulations gang!
The Entrepreneur/Garden Class students were introduced to a new word – grotto, when Shauna, garden teacher extraordinaire, showed them pictures of structures built to resemble caves. The students were so eager to build one of their own that Shauna didn’t want to disappoint them and so began one of the most unusual and fun projects seen in The Child School / Legacy High School.
The Legacy students used bamboo to frame the grotto and then stuffed tubes of landscape fabric with old newspapers to shape a face on the cave. It was decorated with vines and flowers from the garden. Once it was completed, the students wanted to show it off. On October 29, the elementary students dressed in their scariest costumes marched in the traditional UNICEF parade through Middle School and Legacy, then were photographed in front of the Garden Monster.
The class also set up other exhibits: feed sack stuffed “birds” to guard the garden; a Hawthorn Tree exhibit to show wood used for magic wands; and tube socks stuffed and decorated to look like giant worms. As the elementary children explored the garden, the Legacy students took pictures of each class in front of the Monster, while other Legacy students steadied the Monster in case a little one became too excited while exploring the grotto.
Shauna Cantor, our garden teacher is a landscape architect by trade. Each Wacky Wednesday she comes loaded down with supplies and with ideas to stimulate the minds of her garden students in elementary, middle school, and Legacy students. The fall garden has been used to teach about the fall harvest, where seeds come from, and birding. The branches of trees are decorated with seed coated pinecones for the birds, ground cover has been planted, and worms have been harvested and then after being handled by curious hands, lovingly returned to the soil. Shauna has managed to bring the fall garden to life for our children.
The students enjoyed a wonderful day of sports activities and food at Octoberfest. The day began with a spirited soccer game between the teachers and High School soccer team. They were evenly matched throughout the game and after regulation the game was tied 2-2. The students pulled through at the end with a goal during the shootout. The students then went to lunch at the High School courtyard. Lunch was prepared by parents and administrative staff. They prepared an assortment of barbecue favorites including hamburgers and hot dogs. When lunch was finished for all campuses the students went into the gym for a “pep rally” and sports activities. The athletic department introduced the sports teams and then it was time for the fun. Each grade participated in fun sports including potato sack races, tug of war, hackey sack throws, etc. The students really enjoyed the wonderful day. On November 5, 2009 teachers attended a training seminar about bullying at the NY Tolerance Center. We discussed among other things creating a shared culture in our school, factors that cause bullying, the affects of bullying, and how we can prevent bullying in school. The center was informative and the teachers learned quite a bit from their training. To find out more about the center click on the link below

This training was the first step on renewed focus to prevent bullying in our school. Plans are being developed to take what we learned at the Tolerence Center and integrate it throughout our school.

International Day of Peace was held world wide on September 21, 2009, and our students joyfully participated in the celebration. Camille and the art students chalked a huge peace sign in the elementary courtyard. Students heard a presentation by Class 1001 and Class 1010 then listened as the Legacy chorus sand in peaceful harmony. Class by class, students placed flowers around the peace sign as a reminder that world peace is possible.
