Fine Art
Art is essential to the curriculum in teaching students with disabilities. Students in grades K-12 work in traditional mediums (paint, charcoal, colored pencil) plus clay, stained glass, print making, 3-dimensional sculpture and sumi-e Japanese graphics. Classes focus on teaching key artists and stylistic periods and take advantage of the rich cultural legacy of New York City with field trips to museums of all types. From the youngest to the oldest, our students’ work is displayed in exhibits throughout the city and entered into contests.
Our Art Teacher incorporates each grade’s curriculums for Social Studies and Science into the teaching of art. By reinforcing thematic units of study in the content areas, students’ self-confidence, creativity and skills are also developed in a variety of ways.
Older students with a demonstrated talent and interest participate in additional classes, which focus on more formal training. As in all our endeavors, we keep an eye focused on preparing the student for age 18 when students will graduate and be moving on to college and careers.
