Music
Our music classes are innovative, unique and enhance each student’s personal growth. We believe in the “Mozart Effect” – that the practice and appreciation of meaningful music has an undeniable positive impact on a child’s academic and social skills.
General music classes are required of all students in grades K-12 in accordance with N.Y. State standards. Classes provide a firm foundation in music literacy, appreciation and performance. Each child is encouraged to sing, play, read, write, listen, move and discuss a wide variety of musical styles. We remain committed to respect of individual capacities and differences. As in all our endeavors, we keep an eye focused on preparing the student for age 18 when students will graduate and possibly be exploring music in college and careers.
For the student interested in group performance, we offer formal instruction in band, chorus and small instrumental groups. A structured environment is provided where students can focus energy and refine musical skill. In the process, self-expression is nurtured and peer relationships are extended.
Collaboration across disciplines is key. For instance, a social studies teacher covering twentieth century American History might use the music of Duke Ellington to illustrate the culture of the Jazz Age. A speech therapist might assist a student with difficulties in pronunciation by using song lyrics as an aid in diction. These educational partnerships enrich each student’s musical experience at TCS/LHS, further enabling each child to make healthy connections and decisions in daily life, transcending music and school.
