The library is an integral component of the learning community at The Child School / Legacy High School. It provides the physical space for students and teachers to access resources that support subject area curriculums and the varied interests of our diverse student body. The library encourages discovery and exploration by students individually and in groups and provides instruction and opportunities for students to become effective and creative users of ideas and information.
The library will accomplish its mission by:
· Providing intellectual and physical access to materials in a variety of formats.
· Promoting interest in reading and engaging students in dialog about literature and information.
· Providing instruction and guidance to students to foster competence and stimulate interest in locating, evaluating, and using information and ideas.
· Collaborating with teachers to help design curriculums, learning strategies, and instructional materials that meet core curriculum standards, encourage critical thinking, and respond to a range of individual student learning abilities, styles, and needs.
· Providing staff development to teachers and administrators.
Library News
The library is pleased to announce that the conversion of library records to Destiny Resource Manager is nearing completion. This automated electronic catalog will be available throughout The Child School / Legacy High School on computers with internet access.
Upper elementary, middle, and high school students will receive instruction in the use of The Child School / Legacy High School electronic catalog on laptop computers. The library laptop computers will also be available to high school students to access the New York Public library catalog, databases available through the NYPL system, and selected websites.
The library is also pleased to announce that approximately 1500 new books—most published in the past few years—have been added to the collection. The Reference section has been expanded considerably and the collection areas of ancient and contemporary Egypt, Greece, and Rome; American history; biographies; geography; forensic science; and teen issues are particularly strong. We have also added recently published Picture Books, Juvenile and Young Adult fiction, and books dedicated to the students of The Child School / Legacy High School that were signed by authors during the American Library Convention held in Washington DC this past June. Portable CD players and headphones will also be available in the library for students who would like to listen to a selection of books in audio format.
