The Spring Trip is an opportunity for our students to travel overseas and learn the culture, geography, and history of another country firsthand. The goals of the program are to foster socialization, develop independence, responsibility and teamwork, and to prepare children for the experience of being separated from their parents. In addition to the adventure of traveling to another country, our Spring Trip teaches children how to manage their emotions and encourages the development of personal traits such as integrity, honesty, empathy, decisiveness and, most of all, caring.

On the Spring Trip, students aged five through 18 spend approximately 10 days away from New York City. Past destinations have included Spain, Morocco, Jamaica, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Anguilla, Aruba, Barbados, Panama, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands and Costa Rica. Accompanying the “trippers” are carefully selected Child School faculty members who utilize this opportunity to:

  • Develop greater insight into a child’s emotional and social issues
  • Learn about the overall functioning of each youngster
  • Receive a better understanding of parent’s needs within the home

The Spring Trip is not included in The Child School’s tuition expenses. We require parents to provide comprehensive information about their child’s particular needs, such as bedtimes, allergies, medication needs, swimming ability, and general idiosyncratic characteristics of their child away from School. If at any time the Spring Trip staff and the Executive Director have any reservations about their ability to insure a child’s safety out of the country, the youngster and his/her parents will be so informed. Important components in the school’s determination on whether a child may participate in the Spring Trip are the child’s ability to follow directions and the respect he/she shows for authority. Safety away from home is the School’s top priority and the School’s decision on a student’s eligibility is final.

All of the children who participate in Spring Trips have demonstrated that academic ability is not the pivotal element of a child's successful trip experience – rather, a child’s self-esteem and the ability to interact with others indicate an emotional IQ that shapes youngsters into successful adults.

Fall Trip

Each Fall students have an opportunity to enjoy a short trip to a regional destination. In contrast to the Spring Trip (which is customarily longer), the average length of our Fall Trip is three days/two nights. It is open to all students, aged five to 21, and affords an opportunity for youngsters to socialize outside of the school environment, and to develop a sense of self-reliance, independence and teamwork.

Destinations are selected to complement each program’s specific curricula studies or for their historical and/or cultural significance. Past destinations have included Poconos, PA; Lake George, NY; Boston, MA; Baltimore, MD; Mystic, CT; Cooperstown, NY; and Lancaster, PA. The Fall Trip is not included in The Child School’s tuition expenses.

We believe fervently in growth, in choice, in love, in integrity, in courage, in horizons within reach and most of all in that great mystery that is the self.
