Directions

By Subway: The F train is a convenient way to access our school. Only one stop past Lexington Avenue, the subway is the easiest way to access Roosevelt Island. After exiting the subway on the street level, make a right turn and walk North on Main Street (the East River will be on your left) for approximately 5 minutes. Our student created map with landmarks will help guide you. If you prefer not to walk, take the RIOC red bus for three stops. The charge for the red bus is 25 cents. You must have change.  Our administrative offices are at 587 Main St., set back off a courtyard, down a short flight of steps.

By Tram:
Tram is available from the 59th Street/2nd Avenue in Manhattan and takes a scenic ride over the East River. After exiting the tram, you may prefer to walk on Main Street or take the RIOC red bus that stops at the Middle School building. See walking directions above.

By Bus: Q 102 from Queens brings you directly onto the island and there’s a stop at the Middle School/Elementary School building.

By Car From Manhattan:
Take the 59th St. Queensborough Bridge – Upper level and take the ramp toward Roosevelt Island/Northern Blvd. Turn right on 21st Street. Next, turn left on 40th Avenue and then right to Vernon Blvd which brings you to the pink Roosevelt Island Bridge. See parking instructions below.

By Car From Queens: Take the Grand Central Parkway West to the last exit to Hoyte Avenue. Drive along the service road and turn left on 21st street. Go all the way and turn right on 36th Avenue, then over the pink Roosevelt Island Bridge. See parking instructions below.

By Car From Brooklyn: Take 278 East to exit 33 Humboldt Street toward Mc Guinness Blvd to Pulaski Bridge. Turn right on Jackson Avenue and then bear left on 21st Street. Next, turn left on 40th Avenue and then right to Vernon Blvd which brings you to the pink Roosevelt Island Bridge.  See parking instructions below.

By Car From the Bronx: Take the Triboro Bridge and stay right. You will make first right onto Astoria Blvd. Take a right on Astoria and head down until 21st street. Make a left onto 21st street. Go all the way and turn right on 36th Avenue, then over the pink Roosevelt Island Bridge. See parking instructions below.

By Car From Staten Island:
After the Verrazano Bridge, get on 278 East to exit 33 Humboldt Street and follow directions for Brooklyn above.

Parking: There is a parking garage on the island that is available immediately on the right after crossing the Roosevelt Island Bridge and before driving down to street level. Exiting the parking garage on foot, make a left on Main Street and follow this map . There are no other visitor parking facilities on the island and finding meter parking along the street can be difficult.

We believe that a child learns by absorbing and reflecting the attitudes around them, that they learn through trial and error—by pushing and pulling their own world—more through suggestions than through direction.
