Reading Services

Reading Intervention Support (RIS) provides:

  • Highly targeted literacy instruction to individuals and small groups of select students with reading and writing challenges
  • Differentiated, comprehensive instruction in the following areas: phonics, decoding, encoding (spelling), fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, language, and writing
  • Many opportunities for student response
  • An appropriate level of challenge for individual students

Reading Intervention Support is delivered in both a push-in and/or pull-out model contingent upon the student’s individual learning style and needs. Students’ progress is closely monitored and used to make important instructional decisions.

The following systems are integrated to develop an effective reading approach which builds foundational skills and targets students’ specific needs:

  • Fundations is an adaptation of the Wilson Reading System. Fundations is a research-based program that provides the foundation for life-long literacy for all children. It is a systematic, sequential, multisensory method of teaching reading and writing skills. The purpose of instruction is learning to both read and write for meaning, understanding, and joy. Students will build skills in areas including phonological awareness, phonemic awareness and the alphabetic principle, sound mastery, phonics, vocabulary, high frequency words, fluency, comprehension, automaticity of handwriting, spelling, and punctuation and capitalization.
  • The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System (LLI) is a small-group, supplementary literacy intervention. Through systematically designed lessons and original, engaging leveled books, LLI supports learning in both reading and writing, helps students expand their knowledge of language and words and how they work. The goal of LLI is to bring students to grade level achievement in reading.
