The primary mission of the counseling staff at The Child School/Legacy High School is to assist students in coping with their identified disabilities, develop social skills, and improve capacity for fulfilling interpersonal relationships. The counseling approach utilizes a wide array of techniques including the teaching of learning strategies, modeling, role-playing, problem-solving, and an increased emphasis on self-awareness. These approaches are selected based upon the developmental needs of each individual student, with the goal of increasing positive response to academic challenges and decreasing social deficits. Beyond providing individual and group counseling, the staff also consults with teachers, meets with family members, and coordinates care with off-site mental health professionals, assuring a global approach to student needs.
